At the very end of St. Peter’s Basilica’s central axis, after nearly 200 meters of relentless visual assault, the entire church delivers its closing argument: a “golden nuclear detonation.” A cloud of gilded light floating in mid-air, four saints hoisting a throne on their fingertips, with a dove diving toward you from the center of an exploding halo. This is Bernini’s legacy at 77—and the furthest boundary that Catholic imagination could reach in the physical world.

Encased within that 30,000-kilogram bronze throne is a battered, crumbling wooden chair. The Vatican long maintained that this was the very seat from which Saint Peter preached during his lifetime—meaning that the entire colossal apparatus you’re looking at is essentially a reliquary for a folding chair. (In 1968, the Vatican permitted scientific testing; carbon dating placed it to around 875 CE, the era of Charlemagne’s successor John VIII. The Vatican’s response: it remains sacred.)

Directly above the chair, Bernini “tore” an oval window into the stone wall. Not ordinary glass—it’s a translucent panel of razor-thin Bohemian alabaster, filtering Roman sunlight like golden tracing paper. At noon, when light enters at just the right angle, the entire interior floods with a warm, overpowering golden tone; incense smoke drifts slowly through it, and the dove appears to actually glow. None of this is accidental—it’s a precisely calculated light script Bernini developed from studying Rome’s full-year solar trajectory. He turned the sun into his most important design tool.

The four saints hoisting the throne represent theological authorities from both Eastern and Western churches: Augustine, Ambrose, Athanasius, and John Chrysostom. This casting wasn’t random—17th-century Catholicism was under ferocious attack from the Protestant Reformation, and these four represent the highest consensus of both Eastern and Western churches on Christology and authority. Through these four figures, Bernini declares visually: the entire Christian world supports the tradition this throne represents.

On May 13, 1981, Pope John Paul II was shot in St. Peter’s Square; the bullet pierced his abdomen. He later publicly stated that the Virgin Mary had guided the bullet’s path, deflecting it just enough to miss his aorta. The Pope personally delivered the extracted bullet to the statue of Our Lady of Fátima, where it was embedded into the crown. That bullet now sits above this church, under the stars. Whether the chair inside that throne played any role in all of this—that question, I’ll leave with you.
